Effective September 1, 2016, state agencies and their vendors are only able to refer clients to certified alcohol and drug-free (ADF) housing. In accordance with this requirement, MASH serves as the primary agency for accountability of all certified homes in Massachusetts. Our organization also provides supervision and training alcoholism symptoms for sober homes, and maintains a database of more than 180 MASH-certified sober homes.

Grievance policy and procedures, including the right to take grievances that are not resolved by the house leadership to the operation’s oversight organization for mediation. Policies and procedures that keep residents’ records secure, with access limited to authorized staff. A policy and practice that residents be informed of payments from 3rd party payers for any fees paid on their behalf. A policy and practice documenting that a resident is fully informed regarding refund policies prior to the individual entering into a binding agreement. Documentation that the owner/operator has current liability coverage and other insurance appropriate to the level of support.

Graceland Recovery is a structured house that offers a safe transitional platform where mash certified sober homes women in recovery thrive and learn to grow into their full potential. Women are provided 12 step work, volunteer work, yoga, writing, meditation, crafts, cooking, academic and career support. At Graceland Recovery, women are expected to embrace a high level of accountability with an emphasis on independant living. In 2007, eight sober home operators established the nonprofit Massachusetts Alliance for Sober Housing. Legislation in 2014 created voluntary certification of Massachusetts sober homes, and MASH began managing voluntary statewide sober home certification in 2016. We regularly inspect all member sober homes to ensure safety, quality, and the building of a community of recovery.

Vanderburgh Sober Living (VSL) is a network of independently operated sober homes organized and supported by The Vanderburgh Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 Charitable Foundation. VSL works alongside MASH to support and equip Chartered Operators to strengthen their local communities through effective sober housing. A significant milestone in MASH’s history occurred in 2011 when the National Alliance for Recovery Residences was founded. NARR established national standards for recovery residences, which MASH adopted and tailored to meet the specific needs of Massachusetts.
